The\u00a0Algarve<\/a>\u00a0in southern Portugal has been awarded\u00a0\u2018The\u00a0World\u2019s<\/u>\u00a0Leading Beach Destination<\/strong>\u2019 for the third time at the\u00a02024 World Travel Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The region has over 100 beaches spread across its beautiful 200km coastline on its southern and western shores. They are renowned for their scenic qualities and also for their high standards. There are\u00a086 Blue Flag beaches<\/strong>\u00a0which are assessed by the quality of the water, safety, cleanliness and the diversity of the services on offer.\u00a013 are classed as\u00a0Zero Pollution,<\/strong>\u00a0according to the sustainability association\u00a0ZERO \u2013 Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Sistema Terrestre Sustent\u00e1vel. There are also\u00a047 accessible beaches<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It has been a good year for the region with Albufeira\u2019s stunning\u00a0Praia da Fal\u00e9sia<\/strong>\u00a0hailed the\u00a0best beach in the world<\/strong>\u00a0in the 2024 edition of\u00a0Tripadvisor\u2019s\u00a0Travelers\u2019 Choice Awards.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Speaking about winning the World Travel Award, President of the Algarve Tourism Bureau Andr\u00e9 Gomes said:<\/p>\n

\u201cThis really is an incredible honour. We have won Europe\u2019s Leading Beach Destination 10 times but to win the\u00a0World\u2019s Leading Beach<\/strong>\u00a0is another level altogether when you consider the number of countries that have great beaches.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are lucky to have a broad variety of beaches from small coves backed by colourful limestone cliffs to long, sandy beaches. The west coast beaches in the protected Vicentina Natural Park are incredibly scenic, uncrowded and are a go-to destination for surfers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur coastline and proximity to the sea has influenced our\u00a0culture and gastronomy<\/strong>. Beyond the beaches, visitors can enjoy the freshest sea food that can be enjoyed in everything from small quayside eateries to Michelin- Starred restaurants.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are also\u00a0highlighting the region for diving<\/strong>\u00a0with 3 great spots for this including Pedra do Valado Marine Natural Park, one of the first protected marine parks in Portugal and the largest coastal reef in the region; the EDP Art Reef by Vhils, an underwater exhibition with 13 sculptures made from old pieces of power plants, installed more than 10 meters deep off Albufeira, plus \u00a0the Ocean Revival Underwater Park, off Portim\u00e3o. This park includes four sunken decommissioned navy ships, creating the world’s largest artificial reef.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beyond the summer the beaches offer great walks, that can be enjoyed through the mild and sunny Autumn and Winter seasons.\u00a0 Stand out ones include:\u00a0Praia de Cacela Velha,\u00a0<\/strong>a secluded beach with a shallow gradient that’s good for long walks.\u00a0You can also look for birds and marine life;\u00a0Seven Valleys Hanging Trail,\u00a0<\/strong>a scenic trail that runs from Praia da Marinha to Praia de Vale Centeanes.\u00a0The trail offers panoramic views and you can stop at Praia da Marinha to see the stone arches and clear waters;\u00a0Alvor –\u00a0<\/strong>A long, blue flag beach with calm parts for families and on-shore breezes for kite-surfers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
